Ever since I can remember I’ve always enjoyed running. I remember my family telling me that I would run just like my Aunt Maryjane did when she was younger. Instead, I chose to dance and cheerlead. After high school, I got my very first gym membership, and for years I always did my cardio indoors.
I often thought about running outside but habitually made excuses. It’s too hot, it’s too gloomy, I’ll look dumb, I don’t know where runners even run.. etc. Then something changed a few weeks ago.
I was plain tired of running inside. After going vegan, I figured if I could do that, then I could do anything. On one sunny Thursday afternoon, I put my Nike Free’s on and decided to just go for it.
It was a hot day, but it still felt good to be out and about with people. For someone like me who drives EVERYWHERE, it felt so nice to be outside and moving. I noticed things I wouldn’t have noticed if I never forced myself to run outside. Who knew there was a community garden right by my house?
I also decided to start running on a nearby trail, and oh my gosh – it is SO beautiful out there! It’s like I discovered an entirely new world. There were playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, dog parks, and bathrooms! If I hadn’t made up my mind to run outside after discovering the community garden, then I definitely made my mind up after running on that trail!
I honestly don’t think I’ll ever go back to running consistently on the treadmill for cardio. I may go occasionally, but I am in love with running outside now. For people who already run outside, I’m sure you feel me! For those of you who run inside or don’t run at all, I highly encourage you to give it a try! It just might change your life.
Always remember to run with caution and don’t over exert yourself. How do you guys like to get your cardio in? Let me know below, I’d love to hear about it!
